Hirak:
On Friday, February 22, 2019, millions of Algerians of all ages and from all regions took to the streets. The people expressed their desire for a radical change in the ruling system through large political protests.
Protests multiplied across the country despite bans and police repression, which led to arrests and detentions of some protesters and activists throughout the night. Citizens organized to defend political detainees across more than 40 provinces, providing legal and moral support.
The movement demanded fundamental rights, an end to arbitrary arrests, and political reforms. It also proposed a roadmap calling for early presidential elections in 2022.
Despite tensions with authorities, the popular movement remained committed to defending Algeria’s sovereignty and fighting against any isolation of the country. It insisted on freedom of expression and justice.
